If you use both Strava and ChatGPT, you can now connect the two directly — so ChatGPT reads your real training data and answers questions about it in plain English. "How many km did I run last week?", "Am I overtraining?", "Summarize my last ride." No exporting, no copy-pasting. This is the Strava ChatGPT integration, and it works through MCP — the open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and data.
Once you've added a ChatGPT Strava connector, ChatGPT pulls your actual activities directly from your account, in real time. There's a manual route (run your own Strava MCP server) and a shortcut (we run it for you). This guide focuses on the shortcut, since it's the one most people want — no terminal, no server, a couple of minutes.
Before you start: enabling MCP connectors in ChatGPT
ChatGPT's connector support works through Developer Mode in your settings, currently in beta. Turning it on takes a couple of clicks. Depending on your plan and OpenAI's rollout, this may require a paid ChatGPT subscription — that's set by OpenAI, not by us. Check Settings → Apps & Connectors to see if the option appears for your account.
If you're not familiar with the MCP standard, our article on what ChatGPT MCP is covers the basics — including how to enable Developer Mode step by step.
Step 1 — Connect your Strava account
After you sign up at AskYourData, you'll create a small Strava API application in your account settings — this is what lets the service read your data securely. You'll get a Client ID and Client Secret, which you paste into your dashboard. Then you'll receive a setup email with two personal links.
The first link is your Strava authorization URL. Click it, you're taken to Strava, click "Authorize", done. You only do this once.
Step 2 — Enable Developer Mode in ChatGPT
In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Apps & Connectors → Advanced settings and toggle Developer Mode on. ChatGPT will show a warning that you're adding unverified connectors — this is standard for any custom ChatGPT Strava connector, since it reads your data. Confirm to continue.
Step 3 — Add your personal Strava connector to ChatGPT
Still in Apps & Connectors, choose to add a new connector. Give it a name (e.g. "Strava") and paste your personal MCP URL — the second link from your setup email. Confirm.
That's the whole setup. Your Strava data is now accessible inside any ChatGPT conversation.
⚠️ Keep your MCP URL private. It's linked to your Strava account and is yours only.
Step 4 — Start asking ChatGPT about your Strava
Open a new chat and try "What are my recent Strava activities?" — ChatGPT will pull them straight from your account. From there, ask anything your data supports.
One tip: the first time ChatGPT uses the connector in a conversation, it may ask you to confirm. If your account offers an option to allow it to run without asking each time, turn that on — otherwise you'll be approving every request.
What you can ask ChatGPT about your Strava data
Once the integration is live, you can ask about your training in natural language. Some examples:
- "How many km did I run last week?"
- "Am I overtraining this month?"
- "What was my best 5k this year?"
- "Summarize my last long ride — distance, climbing, and where I worked hardest."
- "Is my average pace improving over the last 3 months?"
- "Compare my training volume this month to last month."
It works for any sport Strava tracks — running, cycling, hiking, triathlon, swimming. Any metric Strava records, ChatGPT can reason about.
Prefer Claude?
The same connector also works with Claude. One AskYourData subscription gives you one MCP URL that works in both ChatGPT and Claude — no extra setup. See our guide on how to connect Strava to Claude.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Strava ChatGPT integration?
The Strava ChatGPT integration connects your Strava account to ChatGPT via an MCP connector, so ChatGPT can read your real training activities and answer questions about them — pace, heart rate, weekly volume, overtraining signals, and more — in plain English.
Do I need ChatGPT Plus to connect Strava?
The MCP connector feature in ChatGPT is available through Developer Mode, which may require a paid plan depending on OpenAI's current rollout. Check Settings → Apps & Connectors in your ChatGPT account to see if the option is available to you.
Is there an official ChatGPT Strava connector?
There is no official first-party Strava connector in the ChatGPT store. The integration works through the MCP standard: you add a third-party Strava MCP server as a custom connector. AskYourData provides a hosted version that requires no technical setup.
Can I use Strava data with both ChatGPT and Claude?
Yes. AskYourData's Strava MCP server works with both ChatGPT and Claude. One subscription gives you a single connector URL you can add to both assistants.
